Exploring The Secular Society

What kind of society do we want to live in? Is a secular society the most inclusive and just kind of society? How should a secular society deal with conflicts arising from faith-based priorities (e.g. prohibitions against stem-cell research, abortion, same-sex marriage, women's rights, etc.)?
These are the issues our panel of distinguished speakers will confront in part one of our Secular Seminar Series: Exploring the Secular Society. Presented by the Kingston Humanist Association and Queen's Secularists and Inquirers.
Featuring:
Doug Strong, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Engineering
- as our opening speaker, Doug will lay out the dimensions of a secular society, discuss mechanisms of societal control, and provide a framework for discussion
Udo Schuklenk, PhD,
Professor, Philosophy and Ontario Research Chair in Bioethics
- how do religious view impact on the practical issues of bioethics. Udo will explore some of these issues and discuss how they could be addressed in the context of a secular society
Dolf Harmsen, PhD, Professor, Biology
- are we capable of a secular soceity. Dolf takes a historical and biological approach to the fundamental questions of how humans organize themselves and the values they hold dear
Adele Mercier, PhD, Professor, Philosophy
